or with Spenser who penned:

“The grisly todestool grown there mought I see,

And loathed paddocks (toads) lording on the same.”

For toadstools are not altogether noxious; indeed, quite the contrary. There are many which in their bright coloring and exquisite symmetry of form are quite pleasing to the eye. I refer to such forms as the beautiful white Bear’s Head, hanging stately on tree trunks, or the Death Cup, gleaming white on the ground, or the beautiful green or red Russulas, or the brilliant golden Clavarias, or the dainty Oreades which cause fairy rings to grow on lawns and hillsides.

Economically the toadstools and their kin, such as the puffballs, shelf fungi and earth-stars, are the cause of considerable loss to the forester as they are responsible for much wood decay, destroying millions of feet of lumber each year. As an article in our dietary, while serving as a pleasant relish, their food value has been greatly exaggerated, inasmuch as they contain too large a percentage of water, sometimes over 90 per cent. As a matter of fact, the most highly prized of them all, the common mushroom sold in the market, in nutrient properties, is about equivalent to the cabbage.
